receptionist who, after all, was the
one who involuntarily caused the
accident .
That night he went to bed early
and fell asleep quickly. The fol-
lowing morning, at around nine
o’clock and after sleeping for
almost twelve hours, the telephone
woke him up.
His surprise could not be greater.
The girl he was planning to se-
duce was calling him with a soft
intimate voice to wish him a good
day and ask him if he would like
to have dinner with her that night.
Something in his head told him
that what he was listening did not
match reality but the prospect of
seeing again what that neckline
could hardly hold did not seem to
him a bad alternative to his con-
valescence days and he accepted
the invitation.
The restaurant had the typical
bohemian atmosphere of that Little
Italy area, in the heart of Manhat-
tan. As a good gentleman, he
arrived a few minutes before his
date, and waited for her sitting at
a table discreetly placed in one of
the inner corner of the room.
She approached the table with a
sly smile on her face. She looked
happy and amused at the same
time. Walter thought it had been
a very good idea to accept the
dinner meeting, but when she got
closer and gave him a tender kiss
on his lips the idea did not seem
to be so good. Definitely, some-
thing was wrong.
Then, and only then!, he found out
that the girl was called Susan Tim-
ber, that since she started to work
for the company she was watching
him with a personal interest, that
five months ago she had moved
from Florida to New York, and
that…he had been amazing the
previous night.
Walter knew that New York City is
well-known not only for its trading
activities and multiculturalism which
makes it one of the most cosmo-
politan cities in the planet but also
for the generosity in accepting
every lunatic wandering the world
and able to reach it.
All the bells and whistles went off
in Walter’s brain. It was impera-
tive to get rid of the crazy woman
as quickly as possible. He knew
two things for sure: first, the night
before he had slept almost twelve
hours in his house and absolutely
alone and second, with that sort
of nutcase, the more time one
spends close to them the more
complicated and difficult the situ-
ation becomes .
Using his health as an excuse,
he claimed to have a strong
headache and the need to
go home to take a rest. Su-
san’s answer was immedi-
ate: “Don’t worry, I’ll go
with you and take care of
you tonight”
For Walter, the situa-
tion was taking even
more dangerous
turns. He had
to call on all of
his intelligence and
capacity to work out
plausible stories before
being able to convince
his newly enamored
about his need of be-
ing alone. However,
he could not prevent the
girl’s little victory when
he accepted
her offer to be
called by phone
to know about
him under her
threat of going
to his house
immediately
to spend
the night
with him
taking care
of him in
case Wal-
ter did not
answer the call.
