he smell of beasts mixes with
the echo of the rhythmic, enjoyable,
somewhat pompous, and slightly
martial rhythms. This sound fuses with
the joy of children, the amazement of
adults, and with everyone’s laughter
as they gathered within a great tent,
both in and outside the ring.
It is the circus. It is similar to a house,
or a country, or even to a small
continent. Accents from different areas
meet, each one acting as an ad hon-
orem ambassador of a country that
did not designate them and that does
not even imagine having them.
The tamer had come from Eastern Eu-
rope, claiming to have been encour-
aged by the fame he had acquired
in his hometown while taming beasts.
Many say that he was escaping from
the family of the young lady that lost
her honor in his arms and her life at
the hands of her own brothers. Ivan,
as he calls himself here, speaks little
about his past, he does not mention
his family and, whatever little you can
manage to get out of him, appears to
be based on fiction rather than fact.
There are three midgets dressed as
clowns on the arena, are victims of
phony slaps, stupid jokes, and numer-
ous falls. Outside the ring, they share
a life. Two of them, John and Daniel,
are brothers. The third one is Laura,
who is married to John and, apparent-
ly, excessively “friendly” towards her
brother in law. All three of them live in
the same trailer and nobody asks any
questions. After all, the circus is a sort
of Foreign Legion with out weapons
or wars, but it is a place where peo-
ple who, for one reason or another,
come to seek refuge and escape from
their pasts, their misery, and the rejec-
tion they receive from themselves and
from others.
Many of them have a partner under
the binding tent of the circus. The four
acrobats, two men and two women,
are really two married couples that
met casually when the both circuses
were visiting the same city and their
tents were barely five blocks away
from each other. The couples met
in a bar in the city, they talked and
decided to look for new opportuni-
ties in a different circus by merging
their shows. This is what brought them
to this circus and it was where they
stayed. They get along well, they
respect each other, and they have cre-
ated a very good circus routine that
always manages to amaze the crowd.
The owner of the circus is the official
presenter. He has a deep, powerful
voice with the exaggerated, histrionic
tone that is used by all good masters
of ceremonies that this type of show
usually requires. He wears an extrava-
gant moustache, in the style of Salva-
dor Dali, he has a lean face, and his
hair almost reaches his shoulders. He
stands at about 6 feet 9 inches, which
ensures that he takes the spotlight at
the center of the ring and that he gets
a place among the strange members
of the troupe.
Many more people inhabit this
strange nomadic world that carries
the weight on its shoulders of one
of the most ancient shows in cities.
There is the old lady with couple of
poodles and her show doing some
canine tricks. There is the twelve-year-
old girl that enchants the audience on
top of an elephant while her father
guides him and gets him to perform
tricks. There are the four motorcyclists
that cross their paths in the “Ball of
Death” at the roar of their engines.
There is the magician who, using fake
saws and metal swords, dramatically
pierces through his partner in tricked
boxes. There is also the knife thrower,
who came from Hungary and per-
forms an electrifying routine next to his
most beautiful assistant who, stoically
and bravely, stands still while watch-
ing daggers, swords, and axes fly
through the air just a few inches away
from her skin.
Allow me to stop for a minute and
talk about this special member of
the circus family. She is 30 years old
but she has a skin and body that an
eighteen-year-old girl would ruthlessly
envy. Her face maintains the perfect
proportions of the timeless beauty of
