dress this reality in order to change
it and build a peaceful world of
equality and without exclusions?
There was silence in the Parlia-
ment room and in every corner of
the world where somebody would
be watching or listening to what
was happening in that room. The
Whispering Man felt a huge bur-
den on every atom of his shoulders
and bowed down by that load he
slightly bent his back and lowered
his head.
He did not know the answer.
As he had not known any of the
previous answers ever as long as
he could remember. Only his des-
perate eagerness to communicate
his ignorance made him glibly
verbose in his whispers; he would
say “whisperose” if he could talk
to share that new word he had
invented. His gestures and faces
were merely a complementary way
to explain that he did not know
why people went to him who did
not know anything.
He felt he was about to fail again
so he made the firm resolve that
this time it wouldn’t be that way.
This time he would calmly think
about what he wanted to say and
would prepare the best speech
setting out his ignorance once and
for all.
In his mind, he assembled the
argument and began to state
it: “Honorable members of this
House, men and women around
the world who are watching or
listening to me, I do not know how
or why everybody thinks I have the
answer to every question; nothing
would please me more than that.
If this were the case, I would know
the answer to my own question:
Why was I born like this? And,
why do you believe that I am espe-
cially clever when it is obvious that
I’m not? As you can see, I cannot
even answer those questions. This
will be a very short speech be-
cause I do not have much to say.
You are worried about the world
prosperity and ask a person who
cannot even resolve his own prob-
lem how to attain that prosperity.
Do you want a more human
world? Well, just do it as you
believe best. Pray to God for it,
talk to one another, come to an
agreement, stop stealing and do
not wage any more wars. How
can I know! When selfishness and
weapons keep quiet, you shall
start listening to each other and
will be able to do what I cannot
do. You will be able to commu-
nicate and talk and finally under-
stand one another and be better
persons. I wish you luck and, with
that luck ahead, perhaps you will
get it.”
The Whispering Man talked in
whispers as usual and accompa-
nied his short speech with mil-
lions of gestures and movements
of arms and hands and it could
be said that, in this occasion,
due to the relevance of what he
wanted to convey, his entire body
moved frantically. Thanks to his
elaborated address, the calm with
which he tried to deliver it and the
remarkable interest taken by every-
body in understanding his words,
each one of those present man-
aged to capture a couple of words
which they urgently transmitted to
the president of the Parliament to
do the round-up.
Once the round-up was done, the
entire world burst into an ovation
of clapping and joy. Once in or-
der, the words that everybody had
understood were the following:
“world”, “I”, “know”, “the answer”,
“obvious”, “much to say”, “better
world”, “believe”, “God”, “no”,
“weapons”, “you shall get it.”
The beginning of a complete
disarmament by all nations and
blocks was promptly announced
and people of all religious faiths
sang praises while saying that the
belief in a universal God was part
of the solution.
After this new failed attempt to
make himself understood the old
man withdrew to the voluntary
exile where he never utter a single
whisper again. There he under-
stood what had always been
within sight and he never saw:
that every man had the answer to
his questions, even before asking
them. They only needed to believe
that another man was confirming
those answers.
He also saw that he had the
answer to his own question and,
knowing it, he said it in a last
whisper that nobody understood. .
. and he peacefully died.
