ohn had come to Manhattan
by train from his home in Long
Island and had breakfast at the
restaurant located across from
Penn Station on Seventh Avenue
and 34th Street.
The Big Apple suffered one of its
worst winters. The north wind that
slipped between the buildings
towards the streets and avenues
where passersby felt the true gla-
ciers in their faces numb with cold.
John was not willing to suffer the
ravages of the weather. The E
subway line would leave him very
near one of the entrances to the
underground galleries of Rockefel-
ler Center and from there a walk
to the office where he works in the
Warner Building.
It was a maze of tunnels snak-
ing beneath the streets and that
he knew well for having walked
many times. This hidden pedestrian
network could move a person from
47th Street to 53rd Street in one
direction, and from Fifth Avenue to
Seventh Avenue in the other direc-
tion.
When John came down stairs to
the well-heated subway station to-
ward the parked train, he noticed
the garment colors ocher, tan and
dark yellow of many people mov-
ing along the platforms; there were
characteristic of winter. It made
them appear as dry leaves in the
middle of a stream, flowing all in
one direction, keeping detained
some on one side of the urban
stream, and overlapping each
other when a lover boy puts his
arm around the waist of his lover
girl as they walked together.
