In wintertime, the subway was the
best option to get home from work
fast, and without freezing himself
to death.
He knew, as any New York City
resident did, that a car was more
of a nuisance than a comfort to
get around the Big Apple from
Monday to Friday during business
hours, on the streets full of cars
and pedestrians.
It was a Wednesday night in early
summer when everything started.
He had decided to walk home as
he often did.
At five thirty in the afternoon, there
was hardly anyone left in the
Creative Department except for a
secretary who had recently started
to work at one of the reception
desks, and a couple of employees
from Human Resources who were
completing some last minute tasks.
Walter took his jacket, a briefcase
with notes and his laptop, left his
office, and headed towards the
elevator that would leave him at
Chambers Street, not without send-
ing a smile to the female reception-
ist who was generously showing
what the deep cleavage of her
flowered shirt offered to whoever
might look at her.
He almost always walked the
same route: he would leave Cham-
bers Street and go down along
Church Street up to Vesey Street,
from there hardly a block up to
Broadway Avenue (he liked to
walk by Saint Paul Chapel and go
by its front knowing that it is the
oldest chapel in all Manhattan),
from there up to the famous Wall
Street and along this street up to
Water Street where he lived.
