T
his year, “Señorita Hispa-
nidad de New Jersey 2014”, was
won by El Salvador, represented
by twenty-three year-old Lisli
Flores-Benitez. Lisli was born and
raised in Jersey City, New Jersey,
daughter of two Salvadoran im-
migrants who arrived at the land of
opportunity approximately twenty-
six years ago. Although born in
the United States, there is nothing
she is more proud of than being of
Salvadoran descent.
This sense of pride has been evi-
dent in her participation in various
events representing El Salvador.
Lisli was the Queen of the 7th Gas-
tronomic Festival of El Salvador
held in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She
was also crowned Miss El Salva-
dor of New Jersey 2013 the fol-
lowing year, and now, she not only
represents the Salvadoran commu-
nity, but the Hispanic community of
New Jersey as a whole, as Miss
Hispanidad of New Jersey 2014.
But Miss Hispanidad of NJ 2014
is not just a “pretty face”. She
attended one of the best high
schools in New Jersey and of the
United States; Dr. Ronald E. Mc-
Nair Academic High School, and
received a scholarship to attend St.
Peter’s University where she re-
ceived her bachelor’s degree in In-
ternational Business in May 2013.
She is passionate about languages
and speaks two fluently, Spanish
and English. She has self-taught
herself Brazilian Portuguese and in
college, took courses in Japanese
and Chinese.
Señorita Hispanidad’s hobbies
include drawing, reading, listen-
ing to music, dancing, going to
the gym and playing soccer. Lisli
has played soccer since she was
twelve years old, and fell in love
with it instantly. Although she does
not play as much as she used to,
